Tucked away on lake Coeur d'Alene is a restaurant with resilience. This is a story of honoring a 100 year legacy while still pushing One Shot Charlie's forward. Whitney Hruza, the current leader and owner of this historic restaurant, champions the future one step at a time.

One Shot Charlie’s’s Human Branding Framework

Origins

Charlie came to Harrison, Idaho, as a logger when timber and the river made it a booming mill town, and he always dreamed of owning a bar. City slickers who asked where to find a stiff drink were told to go see Charlie, and his pours became legend. The building has stood since at least 1949, and since 2012 Whitney has carried it through the hard years that followed the 2008 crash and the loss of the railroad that was once the town's lifeblood.
Axis

A restaurant at heart in a building known as a bar. In a resort town that lives on its visitors, One Shot Charlie's is the place locals call home and where every guest is welcomed like a regular.
Beliefs & Behaviors

This place is Cheers: everyone knows your name, and it exists for the town. Good food and good drinks made for the people, a team that's valued deeply, and an exceptional dining experience for everyone who walks in.

Everyone who comes through the door is a guest, never a customer, and regulars are met by familiar faces. It's run to be the town's third place: somewhere to slow down, not just somewhere to drink.
Signals

Charlie himself, on every logo, beside his favorite pin-up girl, with iconic imagery pulled from the town's past. And the line regulars know by heart: the unstoppable One Shot Charlie's, often imitated, never duplicated.
Outsiders

Made for people who want to slow down and feel at home. It isn't for anyone in too much of a hurry to relax, or looking for a place to cause trouble.
Future

Grow into more of a family restaurant, take a clear stand for good times over bad behavior, and give people more reasons to visit Harrison, especially in the quieter fall season.

Project Breakdown

As with any of the projects we complete at our studio, we always begin with our trademarked Human Branding Framework discovery call. Our goal is to get the complete view of the brand of One Shot Charlie's— to discover the beating heart behind the business. Rather than interviewing the owner on mission statements and brand values, we break the business down into seven components based on human connection and behavior. In this way, we extract the necessary information to formulate designs and copy that is true to the brand. We want visitors of the One Shot Charlie's site to feel exactly how the owner sees the brand. Covering the comprehensive origins story that spans over 100 years, the beliefs and behaviors that validate them, the unique axis that forms the business experience, the signals that showcase who they are outwardly from logos to material used at the bar top, to the brand's future.
